Mehndi, Sangeet and Haldi: What Each Ceremony Is

If you have been invited to a South Asian wedding and the schedule lists a mehndi, a sangeet and a haldi on separate days, and you are not sure which one you are supposed to wear yellow to, this is for you. It is also for couples planning a fusion wedding who need to explain the week to half a guest list.

The short version

EventWhat happensWhen
MehndiHenna is applied to the bride, and usually to the women in the family and the guests1 or 2 days before
HaldiTurmeric paste applied to the couple by their familiesUsually in the morning, the day after the Mehndi
SangeetMusic, dancing, performances by both familiesUsually on the same day as the Haldi, in the afternoon. Sometimes this coincides with doing henna for the female guests.

What is the mehndi ceremony?

Mehndi is the Hindi and Urdu word both for henna itself and for the event built around applying it. The bride’s design is the centrepiece and takes anywhere from three to twelve hours, so it usually begins in the morning while everyone else eats, talks and takes turns getting their own.

Traditionally it is a women’s event, on the bride’s side, though at destination weddings it is very often everyone. There is no ritual requirement that anyone else wear henna. People do because it is enjoyable and because it looks wonderful in the photographs.

What to wear: bright colours, comfortable, and sleeves you can push up. Nothing white. Henna paste is dark green-brown and it does fall off.

What is the sangeet?

The sangeet, from the word for “sung together”, is the music celebration. Both families perform: choreographed dances, songs, speeches that go on longer than planned, and often a competitive edge between the two sides that is entirely the point.

What I work most often here: the bride already has her design, guests get theirs at a station on the edge of the room, and the dancing carries on around it.

What to wear: the dressiest of the pre-wedding events. Lehenga, sari, sharara, or a good suit. You will be dancing.

What is the haldi?

A paste of turmeric, and usually oil and other ingredients depending on the family, applied to the bride and groom by their relatives. It blesses them, and traditionally it brightens the skin before the wedding.

It is messy, funny and often the most emotional event of the week, because it is family only and nobody is performing. Depending on region and community you may hear it called pithi among Gujarati families or mayian among Punjabi ones.

What to wear: yellow, and something you will not mind throwing away. Turmeric stains permanently.

Not every wedding uses these words

Sangeet and haldi are largely Hindu, and particularly Punjabi and Gujarati, traditions. The henna ceremony is much wider than that.

At Pakistani weddings the event is often called the mehndi night or rasm-e-henna, sits within a sequence of nikah, baraat and walima, and in more traditional families the seating is separated by side and by gender. At Bangladeshi weddings you will hear gaye holud, which occupies roughly the space that haldi does elsewhere. Sikh weddings have their own structure around the Anand Karaj, with the mehndi and the chura ceremony, where the bride receives her red and white bangles, the morning of.

Different names, different sequences, one constant: someone is putting henna on the bride in the days before. That is the part I am there for, and it does not change.

If half your guests have never been to one

This is the normal situation at a destination wedding in Spain, and it is worth planning for rather than hoping about. A line in the invitation explaining what each event is and what to wear does more good than any amount of explaining on the day. Guests who know that the haldi means yellow clothes they can ruin, and that the mehndi means henna they can have if they want it, relax immediately.

I have written more about that particular balance in mehndi at a fusion wedding. If you are working out how these events fit into a week on this coast, the destination wedding guide lays out the running order I see most often.
