How many guests can one henna artist do per hour?
Between 10 and 12 guests per hour, working a simple design on one hand. That works out at roughly five to seven minutes per person, including the time it takes them to sit down, choose, and hold still.
So how many artists do I need?
Take the number of guests you expect to want henna, divide by the hours you have, and divide again by 10. Here is the same arithmetic already done:
| Team | 2 hours | 3 hours | 4 hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 artist | 20 to 24 guests | 30 to 36 guests | 40 to 48 guests |
| 2 artists | 40 to 48 guests | 60 to 72 guests | 80 to 96 guests |
| 3 artists | 60 to 72 guests | 90 to 108 guests | 120 to 144 guests |
| 4 artists | 80 to 96 guests | 120 to 144 guests | 160 to 192 guests |
I work with a scalable team and bring up to four artists to a single celebration.
Not everyone in the room wants henna
This is where most estimates go wrong. Planners tend to give me the full guest count, and the full guest count is not the number that matters.
In my experience the people who actually sit down are the women in the bridal party, close family, and a portion of the guests, and at a wedding with a large non-South Asian contingent that last group can go either way: sometimes almost everyone is curious, sometimes very few. A useful working assumption for a mixed guest list is that half the guests will want henna, and to plan the team accordingly.
What I need from the venue
- Good light. Henna is fine detail on skin. Mood lighting is beautiful and it is the single most common reason a station slows down.
- Two chairs per artist, facing each other, plus a small table.
- A position with a view of the party. Guests will not leave the music to queue in a corridor. Put us at the edge of the room, not outside it.
Where guest henna fits in the evening
Guest henna works best as an activity that runs alongside the celebration, not as an item on the programme. People drift over between the food and the dancing, sit for five minutes, and go back.
The bride is the exception. Bridal mehndi is its own session, on its own day, and it is not something to squeeze into the sangeet. I have written separately about when bridal mehndi should be applied and why the timing matters more than most couples expect.
What I need from you to quote
Four things, and I can come back within 24 hours with availability and a full quote:
- The date, and whether the mehndi and the sangeet are the same event or two.
- The venue, or at least the town.
- Roughly how many guests, and how many you think will want henna.
- Whether the bride wants her own bridal session, and on which day.
You do not need to have decided on designs. That comes later, and for the bride it comes with a sketch she approves before the day. What I need at this stage is the shape of the event, so that the number of artists is right the first time and you are not renegotiating it in the last fortnight.
