Mehndi at an Indian Destination Wedding in Spain: The Complete Guide

Barcelona and the Costa Brava have quietly become one of Europe’s favourite settings for Indian and South Asian destination weddings. There are good guides to the venues, the season and the legal paperwork. There is almost nothing written about the mehndi, which is odd, because it is usually the first event of the week and the one that sets the tone for everything after it. This is that missing guide.

I am Magda. I have been doing bridal mehndi in Barcelona since 2018, almost entirely for couples who fly in from the United States and the United Kingdom to marry on this coast. What follows is what I wish every couple and every planner knew before they wrote to me.

Why Catalonia works for a South Asian destination wedding

The practical answer is that the region has the two things a multi-day celebration needs: a deep bench of venues that can hold several hundred people over several days, and an airport with direct flights from the cities where the diaspora lives.

The venues fall into three families. Coastal estates along the Costa Brava, where the ceremony happens with the Mediterranean behind it. Masias and vineyards inland from Barcelona and around Girona, which are old stone farmhouses with courtyards that suit an outdoor mehndi beautifully. And grand city spaces in Barcelona itself, for couples who want the celebration inside the city rather than an hour outside it.

The season runs from spring through autumn, from April to November.

The Best Time for Your Bridal Mehndi

Ideally, your bridal mehndi should be applied 1–2 days before your wedding celebrations begin, including dinners, Haldi, Sangeet and the wedding ceremony itself.

I recommend keeping this day calm and relaxed, allowing enough time for your chosen design. Beautiful, detailed mehndi requires patience, and the application time will depend on the complexity of your design.

Please avoid scheduling other events on the same day and try to limit your company to one or two people at most. A calm environment, with minimal distractions and movement, allows me to work with greater precision and achieve the best possible result, while also preventing your appointment from taking longer than necessary.

Please keep in mind that the intensity and longevity of your stain will depend on both your skin type and your aftercare. Once you book your date, I will explain in detail how to care for your mehndi to help you achieve a beautiful, long-lasting stain.

Give yourself the gift of a peaceful, unhurried mehndi experience. Your design deserves time, care and your full comfort.

How long does bridal mehndi take?

Depending on the design:

DesignCoverageTime
CompleteUp to the wrist3–4 hours
OdissiUp to mid-arm5–6 hours
BollywoodUp to the elbow7–9 hours
All designs include front and back coverage.

It is important to consider the drying time of the henna paste. It needs to remain on the skin for several hours to help achieve a rich, long-lasting stain.

For this reason, bridal mehndi is ideally applied 1–2 days before the wedding ceremony, allowing the colour to develop gradually and deepen, so your stain looks its darkest for your wedding day and photoshoot.

What about henna for family and guests?

Mehndi for Family Members

Mehndi designs for family members are usually done on the same day as the bride’s. While I focus on your bridal mehndi, one or more artists from my team can apply mehndi to your family members, allowing everyone to enjoy this beautiful tradition.

Family designs are generally more elaborate than those for guests and can include both hands, either on one side only (palms or backs of the hands) or on both sides. The choice depends on each person’s preferences and the time available.

There are different options to suit your preferences and needs: from simpler designs taking approximately 30 minutes for both hands on one side only, to more detailed designs that can take around 2 hours for both hands, front and back.

I’ll present you with a selection of designs and estimated application times so you can choose the option that best suits your family and the schedule for your special day.

Mehndi for Your Wedding Guests

For your wedding guests, we offer simple, beautiful mehndi designs that take approximately 5–7 minutes per person, applied to one hand.

The number of hours you book will depend on how many guests you have at your wedding. This allows us to estimate the time needed to accommodate your guests comfortably and help everyone enjoy the experience without unnecessary waiting.

I’ll be happy to help you choose the most suitable number of hours based on your guest count and your wedding-day schedule.

Booking an artist you have never met

Almost every bride I work with books me from another continent. That’s why I understand how important it is to build trust and provide reassurance throughout the entire process, especially when planning a wedding from abroad.

For me, several things are essential: a written agreement clearly outlining the terms of the service, a personalised design sketch that you can approve in advance, clear and transparent information about the ingredients in my henna paste, and reliable communication, with replies within 24 hours.

I’ve put together a comprehensive guide covering everything you should consider, including the questions I would ask myself if I were hiring a mehndi artist abroad.

What to do next

If you have a date and a venue, that is enough to start. Send me both, plus a rough guest number and whether you want henna for the guests as well as the bride, and I will come back within 24 hours with availability and a full quote. Designs come later, and they come with a sketch you sign off before anything touches your skin.

You can see the work on the portfolio, read what the packages include on bridal mehndi, or just write to me. If you are a planner, the wedding planners page is the faster route.
