When Should Bridal Mehndi Be Applied?

“How long before the wedding should I have my mehndi done?” is the question I answer more often than any other, and getting it wrong is one of the few mehndi mistakes that cannot be fixed afterwards. The colour follows its own schedule regardless of yours.

The short answer: one to two days before

Natural henna does not arrive at its final colour when the paste comes off. It leaves an orange stain that gradually darkens over the next 24 to 48 hours. Applied one or two days before your celebrations begin, your design reaches its deepest reddish brown for the wedding day and the photographs.

Here is what actually happens on your skin:

How long does the session take?

A bridal henna session for both hands and feet can take between 3 and 12 hours, depending on the design, its level of detail and the areas being covered.

Once finished, the henna paste should remain on the skin for several hours, ideally overnight, to achieve a deeper, longer-lasting stain. I also include a post-care kit with everything you need to care for your henna.

Bridal Mehndi requires time and planning. I recommend setting aside the day and avoiding other commitments that evening, as your hands and feet will need to remain undisturbed while the henna develops.

A calm environment is essential

To ensure the precision and quality of your design, the session should take place in a peaceful setting, with a maximum of 2 or 3 people accompanying you.

Having lots of people around, constant conversations, interruptions and laughter can make you move far more than you realise. These movements make my work considerably more difficult, as I need your hands and feet to remain still to create precise lines and intricate designs. Working in these conditions can also significantly extend the session.

A peaceful environment allows me to focus fully on your design and deliver the quality and precision your Mehndi deserves.

How does this fit a destination wedding week?

This is where the timing gets tight, because everything is compressed. Guests arrive, there is a welcome dinner, there are two or three events, and it all has to fit in the days people took off work for.

The arrangement that works: your bridal session one or two days before the celebrations begin, on a calm day with nothing else in the diary. The Haldi usually follows the next morning and the Sangeet that afternoon, and by then your design has had time to develop.

The trap is flying in the day before the mehndi. After a transatlantic flight, a seven-hour session is punishing. Give yourself a full day on the ground first.

What about my nails?

Manicure before the henna, not after. Once the design is on you do not want anyone filing, soaking or working around your hands, and a salon appointment after your mehndi means someone handling exactly the skin that is still developing colour.

Order for the week: nails first, henna second, wedding third.

Does the weather change the timing?

In Spain in July and August, yes. Heat dries the paste faster than you want, and paste that cracks and falls off early has not finished giving up its colour. Warm skin does help the stain develop, so it is not all working against you, but the session needs to happen indoors or in shade, and away from the middle of the day.

If you are marrying on the Costa Brava in high summer, say so when you enquire and we will build the session around the heat rather than fighting it.

How far in advance should I book the artist?

Different question, and the answer is much earlier: six to twelve months for peak season. A bridal session takes most of a day, so it is not something that can be fitted between two other weddings on the same Saturday. Once a date is taken it is taken.

Booking early also buys you the unhurried version of everything else: time for the sketch, time to change your mind about the design, time to agree the guest henna properly.

Once the paste is on, the rest is aftercare, and that is where most of the colour is won or lost. I have written that up separately in how to get a dark mehndi stain. If you are still mapping out the week, the guide to mehndi at a destination wedding in Spain sets out the whole running order, and you can send me your date whenever you are ready.
