Booking a Mehndi Artist Abroad: What to Ask Before You Pay a Deposit

Most of the brides I work with book me from Chicago, New Jersey or London, having never set foot in Barcelona. They are sending a deposit to a stranger in another country, in another currency, for the one thing at their wedding they will be photographed wearing on their hands. It is a reasonable thing to be nervous about. Here is what I would ask, if I were you.

Ask for the contract before you send any money

This is the one rule I would not bend for anybody, including me. A deposit request that arrives before a written agreement is the clearest warning sign there is.

The agreement does not need to be long, but it should say the date, the location, what is included, how many artists are coming, the total, what the deposit is, and what happens if either side cannot go ahead.

How quickly do they reply?

Ask any planner what makes them drop a supplier and they will say the same thing before they say anything about talent: they stopped answering.

Response time before you have paid is the best available prediction of response time after. If it takes eight days to answer a first enquiry, that is the service, not a bad week. I answer within 24 hours, and I say that publicly precisely because it is the thing you cannot verify from a portfolio.

Time zones matter here too. If you are in California and your artist is in Spain, there is a nine hour gap and a rhythm of one exchange a day unless somebody makes an effort. Ask how they handle it.

Ask to see a design before the wedding day

You should not be seeing your bridal design for the first time on the morning it goes onto your skin. I send a sketch in advance and we adjust it until it is right: density, where the pattern stops on the arm, whether the palms are filled or open, what goes on the feet.

Booking from abroad makes this more important, not less.

Ask what type of henna they use and when it was prepared

Natural henna comes from a plant, and its freshness affects the final result. I hand-mix my henna paste a few days before each wedding to ensure its quality.

Be careful with pre-made henna. Although sometimes marketed as natural, it may contain artificial dyes, preservatives or other chemicals that can cause allergic reactions or skin irritation.

Natural henna initially leaves an orange stain that gradually darkens over the next 24–48 hours, developing into a beautiful reddish-brown colour.

Always ask about the ingredients. Your skin deserves just as much care as your design!

Ask about the day itself, not just the booking

  • How long will my session take? A full bridal design on hands and feet is not an hour. Ask for the real figure so you can build your schedule around it.
  • Who else is coming? If a team is included in the quote, ask how many artists will be coming.
  • Will you coordinate with my planner directly? The answer should be yes without hesitation.

Check the things that are hard to fake

A portfolio is curated by definition, so look at what sits around it. Reviews written by named people over several years. Photographs taken by wedding photographers at real weddings, credited to them, rather than only close-ups of hands. Whether other suppliers, planners and venues mention them.

And ask for a reference from a wedding planner rather than from a bride. A bride saw one wedding. A planner has seen a supplier turn up, set up, deal with a delay and pack down, several times over.

A short version to keep

  • Contract in writing before any deposit.
  • Reply within a day or two, consistently, from the first email.
  • A sketch you approve before the wedding.
  • Natural henna, made fresh, and a straight answer about what is in it.
  • Named reviews over several years, and a planner who will vouch for them.
